Priestley Forsyth Memorial Library received materials from The Office of Commonwealth Libraries to implement a series of Block Play Parties for young children and their adults. Blocks offer children an almost infinite variety of opportunities to express themselves, from constructing simple designs to veritable engineering feats of bridge building.
Block building is no idle pastime. In fact, research shows that block play is shown to help children develop these skills: social-emotional (cooperation, self-confidence, initiative); social studies (people and their work, when played with in conjunction with character figurines and other props); physical development (eye-hand coordination, hand manipulation); mathematics (shape, classification, order, size, space); science (gravity, weight, balance, trial and error); language arts (exchange of ideas, naming of building, stories about building); and art (patterns, symmetry).
Children move through stages in their block play. For example, very young children will usually carry them from place to place and become acquainted with these building tools. For the three year old the real construction begins. Children think critically and creatively in their building with blocks. They try out how high a stack of blocks can go, how to fit a block here to compensate, lay blocks side by side to make a road, and problem-solve when trying to place an uprights the correct distance apart to accommodate a ‘bridge’ block.
Priestley Forsyth Memorial Library is holding Public Block Parties:
• Thursday, February 11 from 5-6 PM
• Thursday, February 25 from 5-6 PM.
In addition to the wooden blocks the library received a variety of figurines, animals and other props for the children to use with . They are only limited by their imaginations! The libraries also received professional resources about block play and children’s development. For young readers, the library has books about building, tools and more.
Children ages 3 and up are invited to attend with adults. Please call the library to reserve your spot in our PFML Block Party!!! 570-473-8201
